HISTORY AND BENEFITS FROM MASSAGE

Massage has been around for thousand of years. In June, 2007, there was an article in the O.C. Register stating the great benefits of Dog Massage and helping increase circulation to their body. Like this article, there has been hundreds of articles written on this subject and on several TV programs.  For several years now, PetMassage businesses have been growing throughout the United States. Many vetinarians, accupuncturist, and massage therapists have worked on horses, therapy dogs, K-9 police dogs, and other high performance dogs to help maintain their profession.

In today's world, there has been reduced socialization, time away from families, increased divorce rates and increased loneliness. Since more and more people spend less time at home, this creates anxiety and stress on your pet. There are many healing benefits of massaging for yourself and your pet.  I find pet massage as a great tool to help bond, relax, and meditate. Studies have shown that:

  •  people who have pets in their lives has helped keep their owners healthy. A recent study found that people who owned a dog or cat had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations thatn those who had no pets. (Dr. Karen Allen, State University of New York at Buffalo)
  • pet massage and natural healing may improve blood flow and circulation, improve their immune system, help with arthritis, sore muscles, tight neck and shoulders, separation anxiety, behavioral issues, bathroom accidents, heart conditions...etc. (IAAMB, Veterinarians, Massage Therapists, and Wendy Crannage, Medical and Massage Instructor
  • Pets may help to reduce heart disease (National Institute of Health Technology Assessment Workshop: Health Benefits of Pets)
  • Pets help fight depression by providing the guardian with a purpose and sense of commitment (Between Pets and People: The Importance of Animal Companionship)

The most recent growth in pet businesses due to the busier lifestyles is Doggie Day care, Food, snack and meals for dogs, Day camps for pets, Dog Walking service, Pet Health Insurance, Grooming and Daycare together, Natural Healing, Holistic Medicine, and Massage. As you may already know, our pets have a limited lifespan and we usually go through a few lifetimes with different pets. Why not make there life special and help them feel comfortable and loved by getting your pet massaged or learning how.

ENERGY TRANSFER

There are important factors to learn when massaging your pet. It is very important to learn about how to protect yourself and not to transfer bad QI(energy) though to your pet and other people. When you have a very busy day at work or talking with people, our animals can sense that stressed feeling. They try to help clear your mind by trying to get you to pay attention to them, look in their eyes to understand them more that they miss you, jumping on your lap and trying to get you to "pet" them; however, if you "massage" them you can help them back therapeutically and show more love and gratitude. Just like our children and family need our attention, our animals do too. Reaching that balance is usually what all of us are striving to achieve.

PET MASSAGE FOR CHILDREN BENEFITS

I have learned that teaching a child to massage a pet whether a real pet or a small to large stuffed animal pet is usually funner and very therapeutic for a child vs. starting out massaging another person first. What I do is teach children and their parent or family member to massage their pet first, then once they get the strokes down, the parent comes and massages them as they massage the pet, then the child switches with their family member.

There are several programs supporting continueing education in massage for pre-schools, kindergarden, and day care in Europe. There definitely is a larger boundary in the U.S.; therefore encouraging parents or someone you know, trust very well, and your child feels very comfortable with this person to massage your children can be beneficial to the body, mind and spirit. Teaching methods such as how conscious touch can be of help in the everyday work with children. Several studies and personal experiences from the Swedish Institute, A Foundation for Healthy Living, and Wendy Crannage, Medical and Massage Instructor on children have shown that massage and touch has:

  • Been a form of meditation and healing for them, their family and their pet
  • Increased their ability to concentrate and stay in their seat longer after massage
  • Helped them feel special, nurtured, loved and attended to because one or more people are massaging them
  • A more calming effect, peaceful atmosphere and sound levels are decreased in the room
  • Stimulated a childs feeling to communicate more about their feelings usually after massage
  • Demonstrated that contact and trust can develop and children who are stuggling with a second language  can develop and grow more with the language the teacher being taught
  • Increased their body awareness and learn their body locations and boundaries
  • Encouraged them to play more tactile games and with tactile tools for helping with motor skills and art such as stuffed animals, finger painting, playdough, etc
  • Taught children about massage and at a young age since they imitate adults, they usually will return the favor back and get into the habit of massaging their family BACK (it works 2 ways guys! haha)
